This tour operates daily from January to December.
Departing from Merchants Road, Galway, outside the Kinlay Hostel at 09:30 daily and travelling south along the Wild Atlantic Way, your fully trained, local driver/guide will take you on a journey through the history and landscapes of Ireland.
Your first stop is at Dunguaire Castle on the outskirts of Kinvara. Standing tall along the shore of Galway Bay, this iconic 16th-century medieval tower house castle was once the Royal Place of Guaire Aidhne, King of Connacht.
Dunguaire Castle and its history lies at the heart of Ireland’s literary revival in the 20th century. In 1924, the castle was purchased and repaired by Oliver St. John Gogarty, the famous surgeon and literary figure. It became the venue for meetings of literary revivalists such as W.B. Yeats, his patron Lady Gregory, George Bernard Shaw, Edward Martin and J.M. Synge.
Today, it is one of the most photographed castles in the whole of Ireland.
Your pamper stop today is at the Hazel Mountain Chocolate factory. Hazel Mountain Chocolate proudly displays the full creation process from cacao beans to chocolate. Our clients adore their excursions in this quaint open-plan shop, where you can immerse yourself in an unrivalled and premier chocolate experience.
Then it’s on through the glacio-karst landscape of the Burren and past Corcomroe Abbey. This fascinating 12th-century abbey is believed to have been founded by Donal Mor O’Brien, king of Thomond for the Cistercian Order. The abbey is noted for its distinguished carvings and rich ornamentation.
Passing through the village and small port of Ballyvaughan on the southern shores of Galway Bay we begin our Burren loop drive.
Experience the unique landscape of the Burren, ‘Europe’s largest rock Garden’ which extends over 160 square kilometres. Mostly made up of bare, grey limestone rock, the weather has cracked and creviced over time to produce amazing patterns in the land. Marvel at the most gorgeous lunar landscape on Earth!
Next, you pass through the town of Lisdoonvarna. Lisdoonvarna in the north of County Clare is a popular town, long famed for its Spa wells and its annual matchmaking festival.
You travel on to Doolin Hotel for lunch. (Lunch not included). Try any of the local seafood dishes, you won’t be disappointed.
Doolin is renowned for its cosy pubs and their traditional Irish music. Here you will find stores filled with all kinds of traditional Irish crafts and clothing. Doolin has everything a traveller to Ireland might be looking for.
Next up is your main stop of the day, the Cliffs of Moher for a 2-hour stop. Wild Atlantic Way - Signature Point
The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland's most spectacular sights and one of the 'Signature Points' on the Wild Atlantic Way. Rising 214 meters out of the Atlantic Ocean, the Cliffs of Moher offer one of the most amazing views in Ireland. (entry fee included).
The cliffs are also a haven for wildlife, hosting a sea bird colony with over 30,000 specimens during nesting season. If you’re lucky, you might catch sight of the bright-beaked puffins, sleek guillemots, and striking razorbills. Watch for agile kittiwakes and graceful fulmars gliding on the coastal updrafts. Though sightings depend on nature’s timing, the cliffs remain one of Ireland’s premier birdwatching locations.
Beneath the cliffs, the coastal waters are home to fascinating marine life. You may glimpse bottlenose dolphins, harbour seals, or even a playful otter. On very rare occasions, humpback and killer whales have been spotted passing by.
After the Cliffs of Moher, you will follow the Wild Atlantic Way along the coast of County Clare, passing Fanore Strand, Wild Atlantic Way - Discovery Point. And Black Head, Wild Atlantic Way - Discovery Point.
From here you can see the three Aran Islands, Inishmore (Inis Mor), Inishmann (Inis Meain) and Inisheer (Inis Oirr), locking in Galway Bay and in the distance the mountains of Connemara.
Tour returns to Galway City between 17:30 and 18:00.
